The Kagadi district Women’s council and women’s league representatives have received 10 heifers from the president of the republic of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni fulfilling the pledge he made in 2019 to women leaders.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni while meeting women’s league chairpersons at Hotel Africana in Kampala on 26th August 2019, pledged to offer heifers to each of them for their personal and home establishment in what he (Museveni) termed as milk cows for women leaders.
The women’s council represents the government whereas the women’s league does with NRM Party affairs.
While at the official handover of the 10 heifers on behalf of the Resident district commissioner at Kagadi model Playground, Mr Bruno Akanshemeza thanked the president for accomplishing his pledge he made to Women leaders 3 years ago and advised beneficiaries to give the heifers good care in order to benefit from them.
Mr Bruno said that government has several programs aimed at developing citizens like the Youth Livelihood Program, UWEP and others. He said that the youth leaders already received their heifers and already giving good reports about the progress and multiplication of these heifers.
“NRM government may delay to fulfill its pledges but at the end of it all, it fulfills its pledges. That is why you see people fighting NRM but end up failing because NRM fulfills its pledges” Said Bruno.
Mr Bruno further explained that this was not meant for recently concluded campaigns but rather this was a presidential pledge to women leaders across the country.
The beneficiaries have vowed to provide better attention to these cows and also applauded NRM government for answering their earlier awaited pledge.
Meanwhile, Ms Adrien Tibaleka the Kagadi district Women council chairperson said that she has been following up this pledge for close to three years and that she is grateful to the president for not letting her down.
Ms Adrien said that the heifers were given to women as a startup for women in 2019 and asked women leaders to multiply them so that they can benefit from them.
“We have spent 3 years demanding president Museveni to give us our cows. I therefore thank him (Museveni) for fulfilling his pledge. He has given us good heifers and we still need more from him because all women leaders have not benefited” said Ms Adrien
Ms Adrien thanked president for fulfilling his long awaited pledge to the leaders.
Dr Moses Amanya the Kagadi district Production officer urged the beneficiaries not to mess up with these cows but keep them well for their own development and multiplication.
Dr Moses said that such heifers may require expertise skills to have them survive especially when it comes to medication, spraying and deworming thus calling all beneficiaries to utilize the Veterinary officers at every sub county in order to have their heifers’ health in good conditions.
“These heifers are meant to uplift the living standards of farmers in Uganda; therefore we have given the beneficiaries enough training on farm management and care in order for them to benefit” said Dr. Moses.
Hajjat Faridah Kimbowa the National Chairperson Women’s Council told www.nettlconsult.com that over 80% of the districts in Uganda have been covered and that each district will receive in the due course.
She however said that the costs of these heifers vary depending on the supplier but said they are in a range of 2M and 2.5M Uganda shillings.
The beneficiaries for Kagadi district are Ms adrien Tibaleka (Chairperson Women League), Hon. Jenepher Kyomuhendo Mbabazi (Secretary Women Council), Leah Asiimwe (Rugashari), Flora Kugonza (Chairperson Women League) and Fatuma Alinaitwe (Muhorro Town council).
Others are Nansubuga Kiyaga from the family of the late Kiyaga who participated in the NRA bush war that brought the NRM government into power among others.
