University student drowns in Lake Bunyonyi

A first-year student at Bishop Barham University College (BBUC) has passed on after drowning in Lake Bunyonyi where he had gone swimming.

Elizabeth Tumwebaze, 19, a resident of Bugongi in Northern Division, Kabale Municipality drowned on Wednesday evening at around 6 pm.

Tumwebaze was pursuing a Bachelors’ of Social Work and Social Administration at the University.

Isaac Atwijukire, the ED of Twinomujuni Children’s Home, a local orphanage says Tumwebaze, who was under the organization’s care sought permission from her matrons to leave and go see her grandmother in Bugongi.

“But instead of going home, when she reached town she joined a group of friends and went for leisure at Lake Bunyonyi,” Atwijukire said.

“At the lake, they started swimming, and that his how Tumwebaze drowned.”

By publication time, efforts by marine police to retrieve the body were ongoing.

Despite several appeals by police, locals have continued to access Lake Bunyonyi, one of the deepest water bodies on the continent, without like saving jackets.
