The police at Lubowa Police station are holding two people on allegation of plucking off number plates from people’s vehicles.

ASP Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan area Deputy police spokesperson identified the suspects as Brian Natamba and Saul Katushabe.

According to Owoyesigire, the duo has been stealing plates in areas of Lubowa,  Zzana, Bunamwaya, Katale, Bukwenda, Seguku and Nalumunye.

Owoyesigire narrates that the two were arrested on Tuesday from the areas of Seguku and Namasuba in an operation following complaints from the affected communities.

It is alleged that after plucking off the car licence plates, the suspects would leave their mobile phone contacts on the vandalised car, which the victims were expected to call for details about the whereabouts of their motor vehicle plates.

The owners would then be asked by the receiver to send money first before revealing to them where their licence plates would be.

Owoyesigire told this publication that Police tracked them down using new technology acquired to fight crime.

The suspects later led the police to a place where at least 46 different number plates were recovered and verification of the owners is ongoing.

ASP Owoyesigire revealed that the police crime database show that the duo were arrested before on the similar offence and remanded to prison stressing that they started from where they stopped upon release.

According to ASP Owoyesigire, the suspects will be arraigned in courts of law again as soon as investigations are done.

He appealed to the general public, especially those who lost their licence plates to visit Lubowa police station to identify them and have them back.
