Police in Kampala are investigating the circumstances under which suspected armed robbers attacked a family of six Somalis in Kampala and shot one dead on spot while injuring two others.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Tuesday morning when the assailants, four in number attacked the family of Mr Laban Mohammed, a businessman who was operating in Kisingiri Zone, Bukesa Parish in Rubaga Division, a Kampala suburb.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango, it is alleged that Laban was staying with his brother Mohammed Yassin and their sisters in the same house when the armed thugs raided their home at around 3 am on Tuesday.

“While they were sleeping at around 3 am, about four unknown criminals armed with a pistol entered their house from the behind door, went straight into their bedroom and started assaulting them,” Onyango said.

He added that in self-defence from the attackers, the deceased and his brother Yassan Mohammed confronted the thugs but they shot Laban in the head from the left-hand side prior to his death while his brother, Yassan, was shot two bullets to his left shoulder.

“The body of Laban was examined from A-plus premises and found with two suspected bullet wounds on the left-hand side of the head and around the waist on the right-hand side. Later, the body was sent to Mulago city mortuary for post-mortem,” Onyango explained.

Police said it recovered two empty cartridge casings from the crime scene and sent them to the government analytical laboratory for further investigations as the manhunt for the runaway killers intensifies.

Last month, about eight people died in a spate of shootings in Uganda’s capital, drawing concern for increasing insecurity in Kampala and some other parts of the country.
