Residents of Katikara in Kakumiro district have been engulfed with shock after a 38-year-old man was gunned down by police officers as he attempted to attack them with an axe.

The deceased has been identified as Isaac Akashaba, a Rwandan national and resident of Katikara north LCI, Katikara sub-county in Kakumiro district. The incident happened this morning (Thursday) around 7:30 am.

According to Acleo Banaga, the LCI chairperson for Katikara north, the genesis of Akashaba’s demise started on Tuesday when he came back home from the bar asking his wife Vastina Owamahoro to give him 500 shillings for alcohol. When Owamahoro refused, he got an axe and hit the saucepan that she uses to prepare fresh maize she hawks for the family income.

Banaga adds that this morning (Thursday) when two police officers went to apprehend him, he turned violent and pursued them with an axe. He notes that one police officer fell down, and the deceased wanted to hit him.

In the process, the colleague shot him on the leg and the abdomen. He was rushed to the Divine clinic in Katikara where he breathed his last upon arrival.

Everest Kabagambe, the Katikara Sub-County LCIII Chairperson, called upon the public to shun domestic violence and always adhere to the law enforcers.

ASP Moris Niyonzima, the Kakumiro District Police Commander, has confirmed the incident and called for cooperation from the population whenever police are doing their work.

Postmortem was done, and the suspect officer whose name has not been revealed was taken to Kakumiro CPC to record a statement.
