Kira road Police has blocked an Easter cup final football match organized by Nakawa West Member of Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi.

The incident happened Sunday at Kira road play ground as Ssenyonyi, amongst a host of other residents visited the playground annex to the Police Station seeking to complete the Easter cup tournament. The MP has severally organized such tournaments for the people he represents in parliament.

Police however raided the playground leaving blocking the kickoff of the match. Police asked Ssenyonyi to instead first speak to and notify the IGP for clearance and later execution of the cup final. For, the Police said it is what the law required.

The MP, who also doubles as the Spokesperson of the opposition National Unity Platform refused, arguing that such sections of the Public Order Management Act were annulled by the constitutional court and so contravene the bill of rights which guarantees freedom of association and expression.

However, Police did not listen to the MP and thus immediately continued deploying officers under the field force unit to block the match from taking place.

Ssenyonyi, speaking on his twitter handle said; “In a manner so cowardly, police and the Military blocked the finals of the “Joel Ssenyonyi Easter Tournament”. Kira road DPC Jeff Ssebuyungo sheepishly said that weddings, parties and tournaments have to get clearance from the IGP. How confused of Jeff! A soccer match scares these cowards!”

Police has since not commented from the incident. However, the Ssenyonyi team says, the tournament must be completed and without informing the IGP, despite the incident yesterday.
