The training that has been organized to train Village Health Teams (VHTs), Chairperson LC1s and Data clerks for the mosquito nets distribution exercise in greater Mabaale has flopped down after trainees learnt about the deduction of their allowances allocated to each participant by the officials.

This drama happened on Thursday at Kyeeya primary school where the training was to be held for Mabaale, Nyabutanzi and Kinyarugonjo sub counties.

Trainees said that they had received information from other neighboring districts showing how they are supposed to get 50,000/= per day worked but they were surprised when officials told them that their allowances would go to as low as 25,000/=.

Participants who were angry could not allow the trainers to continue with the training thus propelling officials to end the training prematurely and fleeing the scene to fear for their lives.

However in a telephone interview with the Kagadi district RDC Lillian Ruteraho, she dismissed the allegations of bowdlerized allowances saying that it’s what she knows from the training they had about the same project.

Ruteraho asked residents to be calm and participate in the exercise because they are the target beneficiaries of these mosquito nets being distributed by the Ministry of Health.

According to the statement, the exercise is aimed at creating a culture of net use and sustaining the gains achieved by the previous campaigns which led to the reduction in the malaria prevalence.

Malaria kills between 70,000 to 100,000 people in the country annually, mostly pregnant mothers and children, according to the ministry of health figures.

Uganda has made notable progress in the fight against malaria, with the disease prevalence rate dropping from 19 percent to 9 percent, according to the 2018/19 Malaria Indicator Survey.

The progress has been attributed to the continuous distribution of mosquito nets, case management, and indoor residue spraying.

Under the free mosquito net distribution, the ministry targets to have all citizens sleep under a mosquito net every night to prevent malaria.
