Ministry Launches Construction of Bunyoro Region Blood Bank
The Ministry of Health has committed 4.5 Billion Shillings for the construction of a Regional Blood Bank for Hoima Regional Referral Hospital in Bunyoro.
Once completed the facility will serve eleven districts in Mid-Western Uganda including Hoima, Hoima Oil City, Kiboga, Kyankwanzi, Kibaale, Kiryandongo, Kakumiro, Maindi among others.
The project is being implemented under the Uganda inter-governmental fiscal transfers Ugift program with funding from World Bank.
Government has contracted GESES Company ltd to undertake construction works and the contract will last for one year.
Last evening a ground breaking ceremony was held at the Hoima District Headquarters Kasingo in Hoima City.
Dr. Sophie Namasope, the Director Hoima Regional Referral Hospital says that, Bunyoro ranks the second in terms of Maternal and Infant Mortality in the Country. Mulago national Referral Hospital is in the first position.
She reveals that, last year they lost fifty five mothers due to lack of blood, adding that, the facility has come timely.
Dr. Dorothy Kyeyune the Executive Director of the Uganda Blood Transfusion service explains that, the Referral Hospital has been getting blood from Nakasero Blood Bank in Kampala and Fort portal Blood Bank in Fort Portal City.
She has called on the contractor to ensure that he does quality work.
Dr. Joseph Ruyongo, the Hoima West Division Member of Parliament has asked residents to ensure that they donate blood in order to enable the facility run smoothly.
Brian Kaboyo, the Hoima City Mayor and Benson Chiche the Hoima District LC5 Vice Chairperson said that, the blood bank for Bunyoro has been long overdue.
Emmy Kateera the Hoima Resident District Commissioner has requested the contractor to give jobs to the local people.
