A section of Makerere University Kitara students association have called for a unified Bunyoro Kitara kingdom to ensure increased bargaining power towards the development of the region.
The students led by their president Edrine Ahuura made the call during a press briefing at the Kingdom headquarters on Rukurato road on Thursday afternoon.
Edrine revealed that the Bunyoro Kitara kingdom has for many generations remained one strong institution and hosting a number of ethnic tribes who have settled harmoniously with the indigenous Banyoro.

“We don’t support the breakaway of Bagungu from Bunyoro because it does not address the challenges we have as Bunyoro. We have a heritage to defend,” Edrine said.
The students in their press statement read by Ambrose Tumwine, another student asserted when ethnic tribes call for secession, it weakens the kingdom as an institution as well as extinction of the great glory of the kingdom preserved for many generations.
The students called for dialogue in pursuit of a common ground between the kingdom leadership and the agitators of the Bugungu secession.
“We unite against the breakaway of Bagungu as this will kill the single common voice that we see us increase our bargaining power,” Tumwine said.
Buliisa that hosts the Bagungu tribe is advocating for breakaway and become an independent cultural institution.
The students join the rest of leaders in the region who have already rejected the planned secession of Bugungu chiefdom.
