Photos: Kitara FC crowned 2022/23 Fufa Big League champions
Kitara FC were Thursday crowned the champions of the 2022/23 FUFA Big League after a home victory over Kaaro Karungi in the final fixture of Uganda’s second-highest football division.
Former KCCA and Vipers Midfielder, Paul Mucureezi converted for the Royals from the spot as they oiled their glorious return to top-flight status as winners of the debut season of a redesigned promotion format to the top tier.
Victory against the Western Bulls means Kitara earned promotion to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League with an unbeaten home run, winning 13 and drawing 2 at Kigaya Grounds.
The oil-rich Hoima City club coached by Sam Simbwa finished top of the Big League log with 61 points in 30 matches and scored a league-high 60 goals allowing only just 20 from their opponents.
In the other fixture on Thursday, Mbarara City FC who finished a point behind the champions inflicted a 3-0 defeat against already relegated Northern Gateway to put their point tally at 60 in their last fixture on the afternoon.
Elsewhere, National Enterprise Corporation Football Club (NEC FC) also earned promotion to the Uganda Premier League after a 4-1 demolition of Kataka to go 3 points ahead of Police who were held 1-1 by visitors, Jinja North FC in the other fixture.
Julius Walugembe scored a brace while Tonny Kiberu and Marvin Kavuma added a goal each at Mbale Municipal Stadium.
The three teams who were confirmed to be relegated from the Fufa Big League include; Soroti City FC, Luweero United FC and Northern Gateway SC. These will now drop to the regional division league, the third tier of Uganda’s football.
