Leaders from Bugangaizi East constituency in Kakumiro district through their umbrella Bugangaizi East Leaders Association -BELA want fabulous compensation to their people affected by East African Crude Oil Pipeline Project – EACOP.

The concern was raised by Obed Tushabomwe, the district councilor for Mpasana town council who doubles as the chairperson of the Association.

Hon. Tushabomwe made the remarks while forwarding the Association challenges to the Kakumiro district Chairperson Joseph Ssentayi yesterday during their monthly meeting held at Bunyoro Kings Secondary school in Mwitanzigye Sub County.

He says that the valuers used compensation rates of 1994 obtained from Hoima and this devalues land yet its prices are high at the moment.

In response, the Kakumiro District Chairperson Joseph Ssentayi revealed that at first they had considered compensation rates used while compensating people affected by Mubende – Kakumiro – Kibaale – Kagadi road project because Kakumiro being a new district had not yet approved hers.

He adds that later alone during the pipeline project, the district held a meeting and approved current rates which were verified by the valuer.

Chairperson Ssentayi vowed to follow up the matter and find out if the ancient rates are the ones being used.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media shortly after the meeting, Councilors said that they started Bugangaizi East Leaders Association -BELA intending to unite all leaders for the purpose of common voice.

They add that this will help them increase their lobbing capacity from the district extending services down to the grassroots.
