Has Maguire finally run out of road?

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is ‘giving serious consideration’ to dropping record-defender signing and captain Harry Maguire for Liverpool’s visit to Old Trafford on Monday.

The Red Devils have had a torrid start to the season, conceding six goals in two games as they have fallen to defeats against Brighton and Brentford, leaving them at the bottom of the Premier League table.

And it is unlikely to get any better against Jurgen Klopp’s side, who won by an aggregate scoreline of 9-0 against the Red Devils in their two Premier League ties last season.

They are not on the same level yet this campaign, having picked up just two points from a possible six so far, but will certainly be the hardest prospect that Manchester United have faced so far this season, and Klopp will know that his side will need to pick up three points or risk falling out of the title race entirely. Anything less than a win, combined with a victory for Manchester City, would leave them a minimum of six points off the pace.

Maguire out of the firing line?

Erik ten Hag chose to keep Harry Maguire as his Manchester United captain before the season began, but may be set to take him out of the firing line after just two games.

As per the Manchester Evening News, ‘Ten Hag is mulling over the prospect of starting the £55.3million Martinez with Raphael Varane, who will almost certainly be recalled’ for the clash.

Lisandro Martinez, signed from Ajax in the summer, was hooked after just 45 minutes against Brentford, but could be in line to start alongside returning World Cup winner Raphael Varane if reports are to be believed, which would beg the question as to where the captain’s armband goes.
