Suspects at Kikwaya police post of Kakumiro district have given a witness account on how a trigger happy police constable extra judiciary killed a suspect in police cells.
John Barugahare a resident of Ikarabirenge village, Kyakajumbi parish, Kikwaya Sub County in Kakumiro district had his life cut short when a police officer identified as Julius Alaku shot him while in a police cell at Kikwaya police post on Sunday at around 9pm.
The deceased had been arrested on Saturday on allegations of attacking police officers on patrol during the elections campaign in December 2020.
He had been arrested alongside other five friends.
Robert Tumusiime an eye wittiness who had been arrested and detained with the deceased from the same area narrated to our reporter that the police officer shot Barugahare (deceased) after putting him on gunpoint.
Another eye wittiness who was also incarcerated in the police cells Mr. Niwagaba Tugume told www.nettlconsult.com that the police officer shot the deceased after putting him on gunpoint.
The deceased was buried at his parents’ home in Ikarabirenge village on Tuesday.
Mr. Stephen Muzaana the deceased’s father who is also disabled and ill with terminal Asthma said that his son was the only provider and caretaker.
He is now demanding for compensation and justice for the lost life of his son.
Olivia Kyomugisha the deceased’s mother said that she was organizing to take food to his incarcerated son only to hear that he had been shot dead in the cells.
The district councilor for Kikwaya Sub County, Mr. Smart Mugongo wonders how a trained police officer can enter into cells and shot a suspect.
The Albertine regional police spokesperson ASP Allan Julius Hakiiza in a telephone interview with this reporter on Monday said that the deceased with other suspects started fighting in the cells.
A police officer who was on guard at night attempted to open the door and know what was happening in the cells but the suspects attempted to escape.
In the scuffle, the officer discharged a bullet which hit Barugahare.
He died as he was being rushed to hospital.
