BKK Premier Trashes Bugungu Cultural Leader Elections, says they are still part of Bunyoro

This follows reports trending on social media that some group of people in Buliisa District have elected Mr. Norman Lukumu as a cultural leader of the Bagungu community.

The Prime Minister of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Andrew Byakutaaga has said that Buliisa District is still part of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom and led by His Royal Majesty Dr. Solomon Gafabusa Iguru despite their purported election of a cultural leader.

This follows reports trending on social media that some group of people in Buliisa District have elected Mr. Norman Lukumu as a cultural leader of the Bagungu community.

Speaking to the press at Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom headquarters, Byakutaaga, said the Kingdom will challenge all the irregularities and manipulative schemes that are being promoted by a few self-seeking individuals whose interest is to divide the people who have for long lived in peace in a multi ethnic set up.

He added that there is no cultural leader in Buliisa District.

Byakutaaga added that the kingdom has consulted and verified from various government agencies including the ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development which regulates cultural institutions in the county in which they discovered that the election of cultural leader was not endorsed by the government.

On 18th January 2023, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Labour and social Development wrote to Mr. Lukumu informing him that the ministry had received a petition against the creation of Butebengwa for seceding and dividing the long established community under Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom.
