Arsonist torch houses in Kakumiro, occupants beached with accommodation

Families in Kakumiro district are stranded and sleeping under trees after their houses got burnt to ashes under unclear circumstances by the unidentified arsonists in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The affected are 20 family members who are all residents of Nyantooki village, Kyobusinge – Mwitanzige Sub County in Kakumiro District.

The victims include Cecilia Nyiramuzungu aged 64 years who said that on top of not having shelter, she has lost all her property including food, clothes and that she is worried of  what next after the fire gutted all what was her means of survival.

Other residents who include Maria, Peace Tugumisirize said that they are sleeping under trees with their children crying due to coldness and hunger.

Meanwhile, Ismael Sendegeya, the Mwitanzige sub-county District councilor confirmed the disastrous act thus calling for immediate government rescue because the victims are living in appalling conditions.

Sendegeya has advised residents to desist from building houses very close to each other so as to minimize escalation in case one house catches fire. He also urges people to stop the tendency of living fire in houses without any mature person to control it in case is sparks off.

Mwitanzige police reached the scene but could not save the situation because six houses and all their belongings had been burnt to ashes but said that investigations into the matter were to continue until the cause of fire is identified.
